Remove Image Metadata
See and remove hidden data from photos: EXIF, GPS location, camera details, XMP, IPTC and more. JPEG and PNG are stripped without re-encoding.

What this tool does
Photos often carry more information than the picture itself. Phones and cameras write EXIF data such as the exact GPS position, date and time, camera make and model, lens, software, and sometimes a serial number. Editing programs can add XMP and IPTC blocks with names, copyright and notes, and an embedded thumbnail may keep a copy of the original image. This tool shows what is in each file and removes it before you share the photo.
For JPEG and PNG the removal is lossless. The tool parses the file structure, drops the metadata segments (JPEG APP and comment segments, PNG text, EXIF and time chunks, plus any data appended after the image), and copies the compressed image data byte for byte. There is no re-encoding and no quality loss, and the picture stays identical. WebP and AVIF cannot be stripped that way here, so they are re-encoded through a canvas, which removes all metadata but is lossy.
One detail needs a decision: many phone photos are stored sideways and rotated by an EXIF orientation tag. If that tag is simply deleted, the photo can suddenly appear rotated. By default the lossless JPEG mode keeps only that one orientation tag, without any camera, date or location data. Turn this off to remove it completely, or choose the Re-encode method, which applies the rotation to the pixels so that nothing is left to keep.
How to use it
- 1Add your photos. The tool lists the hidden data found in each, including whether a GPS location is present.
- 2Pick a method: Lossless strip (recommended for JPEG and PNG) or Re-encode.
- 3Decide whether to keep the rotation tag and the colour profile.
- 4Press Remove metadata.
- 5Download the cleaned copies, or all as a ZIP, and check them in your viewer.
Supported formats
Input: JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. JPEG and PNG are stripped losslessly; WebP and AVIF are re-encoded in the browser.
Privacy
This tool runs in your browser. The data you provide is processed on your device and is not sent to our servers.
Limitations
- This removes embedded metadata, not what the picture shows: faces, street signs, screens, or reflections still reveal information. Names and locations may also be in the file name.
- Metadata can be stored in places this tool does not know about. Verify important files with another viewer before publishing.
- Lossless mode keeps a minimal orientation tag (JPEG) unless you turn it off; without it some photos may display rotated.
- Removing a colour profile can slightly change how colours look. It is removed by default and can be kept with the option.
- Re-encoding (always for WebP and AVIF) is lossy, depends on your browser's encoder, and drops animation frames after the first. AVIF contents cannot be listed here.
- Files with damaged structure are rejected with an error instead of being guessed at.
FAQ
Does removing metadata reduce image quality?
Not for JPEG and PNG in lossless mode: the pixel data is copied unchanged, only the metadata blocks are removed. The Re-encode method, and WebP and AVIF files, go through a canvas and are lossy.
Is GPS location really removed?
The EXIF block that holds the GPS position is dropped, and the tool lists what it removed for each file. Check the cleaned copy in a viewer that shows file properties before relying on it.
Why keep the orientation tag?
Without it, photos that were taken in portrait mode on many phones show up sideways. Only the rotation value is kept (no camera, time or location). You can turn this off, or use Re-encode to rotate the pixels instead.
Do social networks remove metadata anyway?
Some do, many do not, and the rules change. Do not rely on it. Remove it yourself before sharing publicly.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The files are read and rewritten locally in your browser.
