Image Converter
Convert images between JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF in your browser. Batch conversion, quality control and a before/after preview.
Processed locally in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.
What this tool does
Image Converter changes the file format of your pictures: JPG to PNG, PNG to JPG, WebP to JPG, AVIF to PNG and so on. This is useful when a site or program only accepts certain formats, when you want a widely compatible copy of a WebP or AVIF download, or when you want to try a more efficient format for the web.
Each format makes a different trade-off. JPEG is lossy, small for photos, and has no transparency. PNG is lossless and supports transparency but is large for photos. WebP and AVIF are modern formats that are usually smaller at similar quality but are not accepted everywhere. When you convert a transparent image to JPEG, the transparent areas are filled with a background colour that you choose, white by default.
Conversion uses your browser's decoder and encoder, so which formats are available depends on the browser. Output formats that your browser cannot encode are marked as not supported and disabled, rather than silently saving a different format. All processing is local, using a background worker where possible.
How to use it
- 1Add one or more images in any supported format.
- 2Choose the output format. Options your browser cannot encode are disabled.
- 3For lossy formats set the quality; for JPEG choose the background used for transparent areas.
- 4Press Convert and review the results with the before/after slider.
- 5Download the files individually or as a ZIP.
Supported formats
Input: JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF (AVIF only where your browser can decode it). Output: JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF where your browser can encode it.
Privacy
This tool runs in your browser. The data you provide is processed on your device and is not sent to our servers.
Limitations
- Converting from a lossy format to another lossy format loses quality twice. Convert from the original source when you can.
- Converting to PNG does not restore detail lost in a JPEG, and the PNG is usually much larger.
- JPEG has no transparency, so transparent regions are filled with the chosen background colour.
- Metadata, colour profiles and animations are not preserved; animated files keep only the first frame.
- AVIF and WebP decoding or encoding may be missing in some browsers, in which case those options are disabled. Images over about 100 megapixels are refused.
FAQ
Why can't I choose AVIF or WebP?
Your browser may not support encoding that format. The tool tests this at runtime and disables unsupported formats so that it never saves the wrong type under the wrong extension.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?
JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default).
Which format should I use?
JPEG for compatible photos, PNG for graphics, screenshots or anything that needs transparency, WebP for smaller web images, and AVIF when you want maximum savings and know that your audience's software supports it.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Everything is converted locally in your browser.
