What this tool does

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used to fill a layout so you can judge typography and spacing without real copy distracting you. Choose how many paragraphs, sentences or words you need, and the tool builds natural-looking text from a vocabulary of classic lorem words, with varied sentence and paragraph lengths.

Switch on Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet to open with the traditional first line, or off for fully random text. Wrap paragraphs in HTML p tags when you are pasting straight into markup. Enter a seed (any word or number) and the output is identical every time you use that seed, which is handy for design handoffs, snapshot tests and demos where everyone should see the same text.

Generation happens in your browser. Counts are capped (100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 10,000 words) to keep the page responsive.

How to use it

  3. 3Optional: enter a seed to make the result repeatable. Leave it empty for fresh text each time you press Regenerate.

Limitations

  • The text is placeholder only. It is pseudo-Latin and has no meaning, so never ship it in a real product.
  • A seeded result is stable within this tool, but another lorem generator will produce different text for the same seed.

FAQ

Where does lorem ipsum come from?

It is adapted from a work by Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum, from 45 BC, with words altered and rearranged so it reads like Latin without being meaningful.

What does the seed do?

It initialises a small pseudo-random number generator. The same seed with the same settings always yields the same text; change the seed to get a different but equally repeatable version.

Is the first paragraph always the classic one?

When Start with Lorem ipsum is on, the first sentence is Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. The rest is generated.

Can I get HTML?

Yes. Turn on the wrap option and every paragraph is placed in a p element on its own line. For words or sentences you get a single p element.
