What this tool does
Create retail and logistics barcodes from a value you type. Supported formats are Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, Code 39, ITF-14, Interleaved 2 of 5, Codabar, MSI and Pharmacode. Each format is checked against its own rules, so you get a plain explanation instead of a broken image when something is off.
For the retail formats (EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14) the last digit is a check digit. If you enter one digit short, the tool tells you the missing check digit and offers to add it. If the check digit is wrong, it shows the correct one. You can also change bar width, height, margin, font size, colours and whether the human-readable text is printed under the bars.
Everything is drawn in your browser with the open-source JsBarcode library. Download PNG for documents and labels, or SVG for crisp printing at any scale.
How to use it
- 1Choose the barcode format that your scanner, marketplace or label printer expects.
- 2Type or paste the value. Use Insert example to see a valid sample.
- 3If the tool reports a missing or wrong check digit, click the suggested fix.
- 4Adjust bar width, height, margin and colours. Keep strong contrast, dark bars on a white background.
- 5Download PNG or SVG. Test-scan a printed sample at the final size before producing labels.
Supported formats
Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, Code 39, ITF-14, ITF, Codabar, MSI, Pharmacode. Output: PNG and SVG.
Privacy
This tool runs in your browser. The data you provide is processed on your device and is not sent to our servers.
Limitations
- This tool makes the symbol only. It does not issue or register product numbers; retail EAN and UPC codes must come from your GS1 company prefix.
- Code 128 accepts ASCII characters only. Code 39 supports uppercase letters, digits and a few symbols.
- Printed size matters: very thin bars or low contrast may not scan. Test with the scanner you plan to use.
- Marketplaces can have their own barcode rules (for example about colours or margins) that this tool cannot know.
FAQ
What is a check digit?
A final digit calculated from the others so scanners can detect typing errors. EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 all use the same weighted-sum method (GS1 modulo 10). This tool computes it for you.
Can I invent my own EAN or UPC numbers?
You can generate a valid-looking barcode for any digits, which is fine for testing and internal use. For products sold through retailers the number must be assigned through GS1 so it is unique worldwide.
Which format should I use for general labels?
Code 128 is the most flexible: it handles letters, digits and symbols compactly. Use EAN or UPC only when a retail system requires them.
Why does ITF need an even number of digits?
Interleaved 2 of 5 encodes digits in pairs. If you enter an odd count, the tool suggests adding a leading zero.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Barcodes are drawn locally in your browser.
