Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs, estimate reading and speaking time, and see top keywords. Works for Chinese, Japanese and Thai too.

What this tool does
Type or paste text and the counts update as you go: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines. Reading time (about 238 words per minute) and speaking time (about 150 words per minute) help you fit an article, speech, caption or abstract to a target length.
Unlike simple counters that split on spaces, this tool understands languages written without spaces. In supported browsers it uses the built-in Intl.Segmenter word-break dictionaries, so Chinese, Japanese and Thai text is counted as real words rather than as one giant word. Characters are counted as user-perceived characters, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. In older browsers a heuristic fallback counts each Chinese or Japanese character and estimates Thai.
The keyword table lists your most frequent words with counts and density, optionally ignoring common English filler words such as the, and, of. It is useful for spotting over-used terms in copy or checking keyword focus. Everything is calculated locally as you type.

Limitations
- Word boundaries in Chinese, Japanese and Thai depend on the browser's dictionary, so different browsers can differ by a few words; the heuristic fallback is only approximate.
- Reading and speaking times use fixed averages (238 and 150 words per minute for spaced languages; 500 and 300 characters per minute for Chinese/Japanese). Real speed varies by person and content.
- Sentence counting looks for . ! ? and CJK terminators; abbreviations such as 'e.g.' or text without punctuation can be miscounted.
- The stop-word list covers common English words only.
- Very long texts (millions of characters) update with a short delay.
FAQ
How are words counted in Chinese, Japanese and Thai?
These scripts have no spaces between words, so the tool asks the browser's Intl.Segmenter for dictionary-based word breaks. If it is unavailable, a fallback counts each Han/kana character as a word and estimates Thai from its length.
Do emoji and accented letters count as one character?
Yes. Characters are counted as grapheme clusters, so a family emoji or 'é' written with a combining accent is one character.
How is reading time calculated?
Words divided by 238 words per minute for spaced languages, plus CJK characters divided by 500 per minute. Speaking time uses 150 words or 300 CJK characters per minute.
Is my text stored or sent?
No. The text never leaves the page and is not saved.
